The Ridgeway Chorale draws its members from Tring and the surrounding area. Besides giving charity concerts, they sing at weddings, entertainments, carol services and choral evensongs. For many years the choir sang madrigals at 6.00 am on May Day from the tower of St. Mary's Church Puttenham, to welcome the arrival of Spring. Choir members and our audience of early risers were then treated to a luxury breakfast in the church hall.
They welcome invitations to sing at all sorts of occasions and events.
They enjoy travelling, and have given concerts during the last twenty years in such far-flung places as Westleton (Suffolk), Llanidloes (Powys), Buxton & Breadsall (Derbyshire), Wiveliscombe (Somerset), Malvern (Worcestershire), Beaminster (Dorset), Wombourne (Wolverhampton), Farley (Wilts) and Minchinhampton (Gloucestershire) Abroad, they have sung in Montreux (Switzerland) and Montreal (Burgundy).
Since its formation in 2001, the choir has raised over £41,000 for charities - among these the Iain Rennie and St Francis Hospices, the Nelson Trust, the Midlands Air Ambulance and many of the churches in which they performed.
Richard Grylls, retiring director of the Ridgeway Chorale, has conducted various small choirs in Chesham and Tring since 1987.
The May 9th Tring concert was Richard’s final one with the choir – he is taking a well-earned retirement from the role, though he will continue to organise and conduct one-off events.
The choir (which still includes some founder members) would like to offer their warmest thanks to Richard for his many years of organisation, creativity and, not least, the ‘arm-waving’!
